Sketches

I began drawing comic strips in fifth grade, but in high school my interest in the human figure became more refined. Here is a collection of portraits and a few landscapes that I've completed since 1995. Many of my sketches were completed with charcoal pencils and a kneaded eraser. In college, I always carried a sketchbook around campus and tried to fit in advance figure drawing classes into my schedule.

Recently, my subject matter has been my children. Whether they're in a high chair or sleeping, I try to capture their interesting proportions and expressions. When my oldest was two, I painted a sketch of her as she worked on her own project. She asked me what I was painting and I replied, "your face." She pondered that for a moment and went back to painting. I paused for a moment to work on a detail in her portrait and when I looked up, I had to laugh as my daughter smiled at me with red and green stripes across her face. She had also decided to paint her face, literally.
